Today's Global Overview

The globe above shows today's 24-hour average precipitable water forecast. Precipitable water, a proxy for humidity, is a measure of the total amount of water in a column of air that could be precipitated to the earth surface as rain or snow. This forecast comes from the NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS), a state-of-the-art dynamical model initialized by satellite measurements and global meteorological station data every six hours. GFS is the core operational model used by the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS). Click the image to see different viewpoints.
