Today's Global Overview

Viewing:

The globe above shows today's sea ice and snow conditions as reported by the NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS). Climatological (1979-2000) sea-ice extent for this day of the year is delineated in light blue. GFS is the core operational forecasting model used by the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS). Satellite-measured sea ice and snow are input to GFS daily to provide boundary conditions for the dynamical atmosphere 7-day forecast. Reliable daily satellite measurements of sea ice are available onward from November, 1978. Sea ice climatology derived from the NCEP Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) model.
